Water Safety Talks to Have With Your Kids This Summer

With most swimming pools in San Diego being located at private homes, chances are your child will be invited to some backyard pool parties this summer. Before the fun begins, take time to go over these essential water safety rules.

Reminders for Kids:

1. An adult must always be watching.
“Wait for an adult before getting into the pool—no exceptions.”

2. Know who’s in charge.
“If I’m not there, make sure you know which grown-up is responsible for watching you.”

3. Floaties aren’t life jackets.
“Even with floaties, you still need an adult nearby at all times.”

4. No running or rough play.
“Pool decks are slippery—falls can be dangerous.”

5. Look before you jump.
“Always check the water before jumping to make sure it’s clear and deep enough.”

6. Watch out for your friends.
“If someone looks like they’re struggling, don’t try to rescue them—get an adult immediately.”

7. Know the way out.
“Where’s the ladder or steps? If you need to get out fast, you should know how.”

8. Don’t get caught in the deep end.                                                                                                     “If you can’t touch the bottom, stay close to the shallow end.”

9. The pool drains are not toys.
“Stay away from the drains, they can be strong and pull things in. Don’t play near them, and tell an adult if something looks wrong.”
